If you're itching to travel again, but hopping on a plane just isn't in the cards, then you're in luck. Our guide includes 6 tips you can use this weekend that will make you feel like you've taken a quick trip to Toronto for the weekend, without leaving your house.

    1. Cook a recipe that is classic to Toronto

While the city of Toronto is home to an endless number of amazing restaurants, from nearly every type of cuisine you can imagine and everything in between, it might come as a surprise that Toronto is known for its veal sandwiches. If you're going to set the scene and make it feel as though you're visiting Toronto, then you're going to need to put together one of these scrumptious hearty sandwiches.

Made of breaded thin veal cutlets pan-fried until crispy, you'll want to finish off your the fillings of your sandwich with a gremolata of chopped parsley and garlic, the zest of two lemons, and a generous dollop of tomato sauce. Throw this heavenly concoction into an Italian roll and you'll feel like you're walking the streets of Toronto late at night after a great evening out downtown with friends.

    2. Set the scene with a city map print

If Toronto is on your travel list, then there's a likely possibility that this thriving metropolis has meaning to you. What better way to show off your love of this city that with a Toronto city map print. Hang a map print in your home in a prominent location to serve as a reminder of the amazing memories you've made there over the years, and dream of the ones you'll make there again soon. This Toronto city map print is available in a poppy color combination or a classic black and white option for a more minimalist decor statement.

Or better yet, if you have a large blank wall to fill and are perhaps tight on floor space, then consider a custom wall mural that incorporates the Toronto city map grid. We'll make a custom wallpaper mural to fit your unique wall space and in custom colors to match your room's existing decor.

    3. Live like you're in a Toronto apartment

It may come as a surprise, but Toronto is the third largest city in North America with with a population that size comes tiny apartments. And with a small apartment comes the need to keep your possessions organized and tucked away. Take a design tip from a Torontonian and use this opportunity to organize one cupboard or drawer that bugs you each time you open it. You know the one we're taking about. That drawer that is the catch-all for junk or trinkets that are hard to find a place for. Well today's the day to tackle that project and once you do, you'll not only thank yourself but you'll feel one step closer to being in a small Toronto apartment for the weekend.

    4. Watch a Movie set in Toronto

There's nothing quite like a great movie to transport you to another city without actually going there. Grab a a film set in Toronto, or one that was at least filmed there, to surround yourself in the iconic locations and sounds of this unique and bustling city. Find yourself a copy of Last Night (1998), Owning Mahowny (2003), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) or The F Word (2013) and you'll immediately feel transported into the streets of Toronto.

    5. Whip up a cocktail with the city's namesake

Did you know that there was a cocktail called "The Toronto"? Well there is and it's pretty darn delicious. A spin on the classic Old Fashioned, this lip-smacking beverage features Canadian rye whisky (of course!), maple syrup (double of course!) and the unique flavours of Fernet-Branca. Leave it to the city of Toronto to take a classic drink, add a unique twist and make it taste even more memorable. Whip of one or a batch of these tasty sippers, share them with your living-room travel mates and you'll feel like your sitting in a cozy Toronto bar.

Mix 2 ounces (4 tablespoons) rye whiskey with, ½ ounce (1 tablespoon) Fernet-Branca, ½ tablespoon simple syrup or pure maple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitter and garnish with an Orange peel. Bonus points for lightly toasting the feel with a kitchen torch before dropping it into the glass for a slightly smoky finish.

    6. Treat yourself to something classically Toronto

Speaking of Maple syrup, if you're looking to top off your Toronto stay-cation, then go ahead and splurge on some souvenirs that are classically Toronto. Because hey, you've already saved on the air fare right? Head over to a specialty grocery store and buy yourself a bottle of the best quality maple syrup you can find. Your tastebuds will thank you for it. Use it to make your new favourite cocktail or drizzle it on the pancakes you'll be craving come morning. This dark, nutty and aromatic treat is like liquid gold and it's worth every penny.
