The sovereign state comprises a small archipelago centred around Bahrain Island, situated between the Qatar peninsula and the north eastern coast of Saudi Arabia, to which it is connected by the 25-kilometre King Fahd Causeway. The island of Bahrain is fabled to be the original location for the Garden of Eden and was a major destination in the ancient epic of Gilgamesh. Bahrain was made wealthy in early history for its pearl diving industry which still thrives today.
