TULIPMANIA
Tulip mania was a period in the Dutch Golden Age during which contract prices for some bulbs of the recently introduced and fashionable tulip reached extraordinarily high levels and then dramatically collapsed in February 1637. This collapse is seen as the first collapse of an early version of a stock market. The collapse in tulips was due in large part to crop failure towards the beginning and middle of the 1600's but was made dramatically more detrimental because of a concept new to history, the buying of "shares". Traders would sell "shares" in tulip crops increasing the overall demand and value for the flower without true ownership of the end product. This idea in buying stock both created Europes first truly wealthy middle class in Holland but also saw its downfall would nearly collapse the government. Shortly after the collapse of the tulip trade, the government of Holland instituted regulations. While the stock market concept had caused devastating loss for many people in the country and was a very volatile and risky endeavour, the government had gained a taste for a wealthy middle class propped up by stock trading. This tradition of buying shares continued and is now the main stay of our global economy today with all of the risk/reward seen in the 1600's. Holland remains to this day the worlds largest trader in tulips world wide.
