THE BOSPHORUS STRAIT

The Bosphorus or Bosporus is a narrow, natural strait and an internationally significant waterway located in northwestern Turkey. It forms part of the continental boundary between Europe and Asia, and divides Turkey by separating Anatolia from Thrace. The western banks of the Bosphorus constitute the geographic starting point of the European continent, while the banks to the east are the geographic beginnings of the continent of Asia. Historically this crossroads has been the site of many ancient civilizations. The Turkish city of Istanbul, formerly Roman and Byzantium Constantinople, lies on the south western edge of the strait on a spit of land and natural inlet called the Golden Horn. Istanbul is one of the worlds greatest historically rich cities with intricate layers of architecture from ancient Roman to Byzantium and later Ottoman inhabitants. This area has been seen for millennia as the meeting point of Western and Eastern culture.
